What Is Laser Eye Surgery?

There are several types of refractive surgery to correct refractive errors like nearsightedness or farsightedness, including laser-assisted cataract surgery. Dr. Abrams can provide a consultation for this type of surgery as well.

Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is a popular type of refractive surgery that changes the shape of your cornea. A flap is cut in the cornea and then pulled back so the rest of your cornea can be reshaped using a laser. After reshaping, the flap is put back and heals in place.

During surgery, the flap can be made with a laser or a sharp blade. Bladeless LASIK may allow for quicker healing, more precise vision correction, and even lower instances of surgical complications.

Am I a Good Candidate for LASIK?

You may not be a good candidate for LASIK of you have any of the following conditions:

LASIK is also not ideal for those who regularly participate in contact sports.

Alternatives to LASIK

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) is a popular alternative to LASIK. If you have thin corneas or a very active lifestyle, PRK may be a better option for you.

No flap is cut in your cornea during PRK—instead, the cornea’s outer layer is completely removed, and the rest of the layers are reshaped with a laser to correct your refractive error.

Healing may take longer with PRK than with LASIK.

Managing Your Expectations

Laser eye surgery is not the right choice for everyone. We will provide you with all of the information you need for the options applicable to you, so you can proceed with an informed decision.

One of the most important considerations to any surgery is to manage your expectations. While most patients can get rid of glasses and contact lenses for good, some will still need corrective lenses after surgery for tasks like reading or driving at night.

Please book an appointment with Dr. Abrams today to discuss your laser eye surgery options.
