Eye Care Is Part of Overall Diabetes Care
Almost 14 million Canadians are expected to have diabetes by 2026. The risk of blindness is 25 times higher in people with diabetes than those without the disease. If you have diabetes, looking after your eyes is an important part of looking after your overall health.
Routine, comprehensive eye examinations can uncover diabetes-related eye problems before they lead to vision loss. Our office has invested in the latest retinal imaging technology to look closely at your ocular health. We will be your partner in preserving your eyesight. If you have diabetes, please book an appointment today.

How Does Diabetes Impact the Eyes?
Diabetes can impact many organs and areas of the body, not the least of which are your eyes. This disease prevents your body from making or using insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar.
Diabetic Retinopathy
Long periods of high blood sugar or blood sugar fluctuation can damage the small blood vessels in the retina. This condition is known as diabetic retinopathy. It is the most common cause of legal blindness in working-age people. Initially, there may be no symptoms, so the only way you know if you have diabetic retinopathy is through a retinal exam.
As the damage progresses, symptoms include:
- Loss of central vision
- Black spots or holes in your vision
- Inability to see colours
Diabetic Macular Edema
Diabetic macular edema progresses from diabetic retinopathy. The tiny blood vessels in the retina can bulge and leak fluid into the macula, causing it to swell. The macula is responsible for central vision and allows you to recognize faces, read, and drive.
Those with diabetic retinopathy may eventually develop diabetic macular edema. It is a serious condition that can damage your central vision and impact your quality of life.
Monitoring Diabetic Eye Disease
Our office has invested in advanced technology to better protect your ocular health.
We use optical coherence tomography (OCT) to take cross-section images of your retina. These images allow us to see and measure the various layers of the retina to help us detect diabetic retinopathy in its earliest stages. This imaging technology is noninvasive. It is a simple, digital scan.
During your exam, we will dilate your pupils to get a clearer view of your eye to look for abnormal blood vessels, signs of bleeding, or scar tissue. In addition to regular eye exams, diligently managing your blood sugar can help protect your vision.
Early Detection of Eye Issues
Those with diabetes may not notice any symptoms or changes in their vision at first. But, as diabetes progresses, it can lead to serious vision problems like cataracts, glaucoma, and changes in your prescription.
The best way to detect any developing vision problems is with regular, comprehensive eye exams. If you have diabetes, please visit us for annual eye exams. Book yours today.
