Keep Them Near & Their Near Objects Clear
Myopia is increasing among Canadian children. Currently, 30% of Canadians are myopic, and it is estimated that by 2050, more than half of the world’s population will have this refractive error.
Myopia usually begins in childhood, so it is important for your child to have annual comprehensive eye exams to detect it.
Though there is no cure for myopia, myopia control methods can slow its progression and prevent the risk of more serious eye conditions that come with high myopia.
We can offer several options to slow the progression of myopia in children. Please book an appointment for your child today.

What Is Myopia?
Myopia is commonly known as nearsightedness. When close-up objects are clear, but far away objects are blurry, myopia is usually the cause. Myopia occurs when the eye is too long or the cornea is too curved, resulting in the image falling in front of the retina. This error in refraction causes distant objects to be blurry.
As children get older, their myopia generally progresses until their vision stabilizes around age 20. The risk of more serious vision problems like retinal detachment and cataracts increases with high myopia.

How We Manage Myopia
Aside from the many whole-body benefits of physical activity, studies show that time outdoors can also slow the progression of myopia in kids.
However, several other methods of myopia control can also help your child.
Medication
Atropine is a medicated eye drop shown to slow the progression of myopia. It is usually given at bedtime and can decrease the advancement of myopia by half.
Specialty Lenses For Kids
Specialty contact lenses can slow the elongation of the eye. MiSight® lenses are suitable for children 8 years of age and up. They are well-tolerated by children and are easy to use.
These bifocal soft contact lenses are shown to reduce myopia progression by up to 59% using peripheral defocus technology.
Younger kids and those who prefer glasses also have the option of peripheral defocus lenses. Spectacle lenses like MiyoSmart provide clear vision and slow myopia progression. Studies show them to be very effective.
Help Your Child Slow Myopia Progression
Vision problems such as difficulty seeing in class are often misdiagnosed as behavioural problems. Clear vision allows kids to learn unimpeded. By controlling myopia, you can set your child up for success.
Please book an appointment with Dr. Abrams today to explore the options available to control your child’s myopia.
