Don’t take your eye health for granted. Protect your eyesight with some simple tips.
- Green, leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, and collards
- Salmon, tuna, and other oily fish
- Eggs, nuts, beans, and other non-meat protein sources
- Oranges and other citrus fruits or juices
These foods contain omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc, and vitamins C and E. Studies have shown that these nutrients may help ward off age-related vision problems such as macular degeneration and cataracts.

2. Butt OUT
There are no benefits to smoking. It also makes you more likely to get cataracts, optic nerve damage, and macular degeneration in addition to many other health related conditions and diseases.
Sunglasses that block 99% to 100% of both UVA and UVB rays are your best choice to filter the sun’s harmful UV rays. Lenses that wrap around provide extra protection while Polarized Lenses will reduce glare when driving.
Contact Lenses offer some offer UV protection but it’s still a good idea to wear sunglasses.

4. Safety Eyewear at Home, at Work, and While Playing Sports
If you work with hazardous or airborne materials at work or home, wear safety glasses or protective goggles every time.
Certain sports such as ice hockey, racquetball, and lacrosse can also lead to eye injury. Wear eye protection (such as helmets with protective face masks or sports goggles with polycarbonate lenses) to shield your eyes.
5. Visit Your Eye Doctor
Everyone, even young children, should have their eyes examined regularly. Naturally it is beneficial to protect your sight and equally important to identify or manage any underlying systemic diseases.
Most sight threatening eye diseases do not present with visual symptoms early in their onset. Glaucoma is a perfect example of an eye disease which presents with subtle painless peripheral visual field loss. Early detection is paramount in improving visual outcome.
